Into a new profession with old experience

Not only graduates face a lack of experience. A cardinal change in activity and 45-year-olds makes you wonder what to write in a resume. But leaving the experience empty is like not responding to a job at all. We explain why this is so.

Choosing those who have more experience is both the safest tactic and the bad habit of some recruiters. Therefore, changing a profession is not easy. You are surrounded by competitors with extensive experience in the specialty, and to prove that you are also well suited for this position is not easy. Especially if for 10 years you have been making a career in another field of activity.

In order not to confuse employers, some job seekers simply cross out previous experience: why write something that is still not useful in a new place? But they forget about three important points.

1. Employers ignore people with no experience.
Judging by the polls, 83% of employers believe that when changing a profession it is necessary to at least describe work experience over the past 3 years. And 88% of recruiters will look for useful skills acquired in the old place in your resume.

If your experience is much larger and you do not want to talk about it in detail, try to group some places of work. What was more than 10 years ago is unlikely to interest the recruiter, so you don’t need to go into details. But the fact of having a job already tells a lot: that you didn’t sit on your parents’s neck all your life, that you had no problems with the law, that you had a desire to grow and develop, you had professional achievements.

Also focus on those educational programs, courses and internships that have prepared you to work in a new place. This information is expected by 91% of employers.

2. Experience is not a profession, but competencies
The financier, who decided to switch to Internet marketing, will take with him the analytical skills, accuracy and ability to calculate profits. A sociologist who has gone into PR will apply knowledge of social laws and features of different audiences in a new place. A linguist in the place of a sales specialist will be able to present the advantages of the product and talk about it in a favorable light.

Yes, you are leaving old work and old tasks. But your competencies will be the main argument in order to offer you a new place. Therefore, in the resume, shift your focus from routine and unloved work tasks to those skills that helped you complete them.

3. More experience - more invitations
We already told you how your employer sees your feedback. He himself adjusts the appearance of the list of respondents: first, he flips through brief information from the resume - experience, age, education. And he opens the document completely if he noticed something interesting.

An empty resume will not interest the employer: he has no reason to open it and read the cover letter. But the response of a person with interesting experience, albeit in a different field, can be hooked. And in this case, the cover letter is your main assistant. Briefly and clearly explain why you are ready to work in a new profession. Tell us about what steps have already been taken in this direction: what courses have passed, what projects have you done on your own, how did you work on freelance or did an internship.

A person without experience is a person without skills, knowledge, ability to work and the right motivation. If you want to prove the opposite to your employer, reflect this in your resume. Good luck searching!
